A Self-Made Man: Charles Hornby (1816-1881) - Manager of Pin Mill, Bolton.
Gareth's book Past Lives, Forgotten Stories: Cobbled Patchworks of History is due to be be published by The Book Guild in early 2026. The book is about his own family and local and social history, focusing largely on the Bolton area.
One of the chapters focuses on the life of my 3x great grandfather Charles Hornby. An illegitimate child raised by Presbyterian weavers in the Egerton area, Charles rapidly climbed the social ladder. For many years he was manager of Ormrod & Hardcastle's Pin Mill in Bolton.
