The surviving records confirm that the first year of operation of the Harwood Temperance Sick and Burial Society was from August 1836, starting with 28 members, these being:

It is interesting to note that John Bolton, James Horrocks, John Scowcroft and West Scowcroft were amongst the original 15 Trustees appointed to administer the building of the new Sunday School in 1822.
